PhD Opportunities

Hello! Thank you for considering working with me during your PhD in Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto.

If you're considering applying to the PhD program, please go through the information provided in the link first before reaching out to ensure that you have the appropriate background that will allow you to succeed in our program: https://www.statistics.utoronto.ca/graduate/phd-application-information

Keep in mind the following:

"Successful candidates have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or a related field. Outstanding performance in their course work, outstanding letters of recommendations and well-thought-out statements of intent are an asset. Prior research experience is also valuable."

- Strongly preferred coursework completed: real analysis, the entire calculus series, linear algebra. If you have not taken some of these courses but have done theoretical math or courses with proofs, you may be okay!
- Prior research experience is not a must for me.
- If your grades have shown improvement in recent years, please do highlight that. If your grades are not the best (more of a mix of As, Bs with a very rare C), but you have demonstrated to be very passionate about research, highlight that as well! There's no one type of student that will be successful in a PhD program in statistics -- but a minimum mathematical knowledge to do well enough in the courses is necessary.

Quantitative Ecology Folks: While I do work a lot in ecology and with shark data, I cannot currently recruit students without the mathematical training provided above. I expect that this will change in the next few years. Also, keep in mind that much of the training you would receive with me is not focused on the ecology of sharks or other animals/plants, but rather a deep understanding of the statistical methods that are used to analyze their data.
